So I have to say I love to oil paint in my spare time(well, I just pretend I have spare time and fit it in). I took my first paint class in college on a whim and absolutely loved it! I love the smell of oil paint, I love the freedom it provides through each paint stroke and how it takes me to a different place with each painting. I put on music that I"m in the mood to listen to that inspires me(with each painting it is often different. This one was the soundtrack to Mona Lisa Smiles, which happens to be my second favorite movie just behind "The Notebook" ). I choose compositions according to the person I'm painting the pic for. This one was for my little sister who loves the modern/antique look. It fits her personality and style. I have have yet to paint myself a picture....I just really enjoy doing it for family and friends.

I also enjoy shopping secondhand stores and transforming items into something different. Example: I found this framed sewn picture. I noticed the fabric was wrapped around a canvas frame and them framed again with a regular frame. I was so excited to find this steal b/c frame can be pricey and this piece of work was only $4.99....sweet eh!

BEFORE
So i took the sewn picture off and painted both frames white. I decided to use dryer sheets and make a 3-dimensional piece. I poked holes in a cardboard piece that fit the frame and pulled dryer sheets through the cardboard. i love the dimension it provides and plus, it is a great room freshener(this I hadn't thought about until I hung it up and what a nice scent it provides)
AFTER

With the second frame that I painted white I framed a collage of surfing pics, running numbers that Dustin and I raced, and other random tags, surfing stickers and inspiring quotes that we have collected. cost: $0

So in total I spent $4.99 with 2 new wall pieces. I often feel more creative when I have to be....so cheers to being poor grad students!

That is so cool that you found it for only 4.99. Both are really cool, but I love the idea of the dryer sheets piece. Very cool!

Your bedroom art looks better in "real" life too! Wish I was even a little artsy! Maybe you will rub off on me a little.

You are a rare talent, indeed. (Okay, I've watched Tinkerbell too many times recently. It's too cold here!)

Your ideas are always so wonderful. What a beautiful oil painting! I have many times been in a fix in not knowing how to design one of our rooms, and how I wish I could beam you up, Lore! You have impeccable taste and such talent.
